Charioteer Theatre is an International Theatre Company and a training centre founded in 2005 to build cross-cultural bridges and provide unique theatrical experiences by enabling British and European actors to work collaboratively on joint projects. By working in this way we provide unique and beneficial opportunities in terms of professional development for all concerned, in addition to creating theatre experiences that audiences find intriguing, refreshingly different and highly enjoyable. We offer laboratories and workshops on various disciplines, led by internationally renowned teachers; creating opportunities for actors and students of different nationalities and backgrounds to train and work together. Participants from specific laboratories often further developed their work in our related productions. Our productions aim to promote the Classics, making them accessible to a wide range of people from different cultural and educational backgrounds, both here and abroad. Because of the Artistic Director origins, Laura Pasetti, the company has established a very interesting collaboration with the most prestigeous Italian theatres focusing on the development of a repertoire for young adults.
Our logo is inspired by the charioteer from Phaedrus by Plato. The charioteer takes the reins of two horses, the white one obeys always to the charioteer and the black one that is a rebel; the charioteer must struggle to make him do what he wants. The charioteer must guide his chariot beyond the clouds, where Gods revolve above the Earth. After having seen the Gods, the charioteer will be able to come back to Earth and tell men, who have never seen Gods, about that celestial world. According to us, this story is a metaphor that perfectly describes theatrical people’s character. The white and the black horses symbolize the discipline and the creativity, the discernment and the intuition. Both are necessary to the artist, since it is from their union that a forceful upthrust arises to make the actor worthy of being in the presence of Gods, witnessing their celestial essence.
