Who we are
We must love not ourselves in art but art in ourselves. - Stanislavski

"I want to recover a theatrical sense that has been lost. I want it to be primarily educational and a spiritual path, not just entertainment. It can be entertaining, but the aim is for audience and players to go home with the soul richer and nourished. I want a theatre that can raise consciousness, and I want to create this by producing higher quality actors and higher quality product. We need actors who are able to reach beyond their own ego, to be in some ways like monks, preparing to sacrifice everything when preparing a play. There is a higher purpose - awakening consciousness; no actors will do that just for entertainment. Seeing a play performed in a certain way, with authenticity, could really enrich and stimulate people to go home and . . . paint a better picture, cook a better dinner . . . ultimately fill up life with more love."

Clare Waddington
"I was born and bred a true Lancashire lass in the little mill town of Oldham, and the home of the tubular bandage! After completing my schooling, I trained to be a teacher of Drama and Music and worked for a time in a secondary school. I eventually realised that I wanted to extend my knowledge of both theatre and performance, and so embarked upon a three year course of training with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Since then, I have brought up my two sons, at the same time working in both Britain and Germany in theatres and schools. I have now reached a stage of assessment in my life, and feel the need to work on a much deeper and more meaningful level. My involvement with Charioteer Theatre presents me with the opportunity to rediscover the artist within, a journey which I look forward to immensely.

Why "Charioteer"?
"While I was in Moscow working with Master Vassiliev on the text "Phaedrus" written by Plato, I was particularly touched by the description of the soul as a charioteer led by two horses, a white one, obedient and easy to drive, and a black, rebellious and instinctive that makes the charioteer struggle. The charioteer drives the chariot and the two horses on a journey above the skies to see the gods. I felt that this was the perfect image for a theatre on a journey in the sky of life searching for the truth . . ."
